Thou shall not teach

A high school teacher who confessed to having sex with two of her underage students is now facing another charge after a third student came forward.

Earlier this month, two Arlington High School students - aged 16 and 17 - claimed they were involved in a relationship with Stacy Hopkins, 28. After she confessed to the affairs another 17-year-old student said he also had a relationship with her which started earlier this year. He said that each incident took place at her Cordova home.

According to WMCTV, Hopkin's ex-boyfriend went to the school after he discovered she had sent nude photos of herself to the students. Hopkins is on unpaid leave from Arlington High School.  She has taught P. E. at the school for six years. She was also the assistant junior varsity basketball coach.

A real private teacher ;)

A 28-year-old private school teacher is facing up to three years in jail after being accused of sexually molesting one of her students. Colette Phelps is said to be 'deeply embarrassed' by the charges, which came to light after school chiefs received a tip off.

San Jose police said Colette Phelps, 28, of Los Gatos, was arrested at her home without incident on June 1, but information about the arrest was not released until just before midnight on June 14.  Phelps, a teacher at San Jose's Stratford School, was booked into Santa Clara County Jail, but was later released on her own recognizance.

The arrest was made after investigators received a tip about the alleged molestation, which reportedly involved a 14- or 15-year old child and occurred over a period of two months beginning in April. Phelps is alleged to been carrying out 'lewd and lascivious acts'.

Investigators believe the sexual relationship between Phelps and the student began on April 10 and continued until June 1. Phelps, who has been a teacher at the private Stratford Middle School in San Jose, California, for five years, has been placed on an indefinite leave of absence, according to the school's founder, Sherry Adams. Phelps' Facebook page says she is a specialty course teacher, graduated from Los Gatos High School in 2000 and studied music at Chapman University. She lists her favourite 'sports' as shopping and fist pumping.

Phelps did not enter a plea when she appeared before a court to face two charges of lewd behaviour.
Her lawyer Steven Clark said she was 'deeply embarrassed' by the charges. Mr Clark said he would present evidence that Phelps had a medical issue that could have played a part in the alleged abuse.

'I will say that Ms Phelps has had some significant personal and medical challenges in her life recently', Mr Clark said. 'I'm going to be appraising the DA office of that'.

Authorities said police received reports at around 10 a.m. on June 1 that Phelps had allegedly committed lewd acts with a student. She has been fired
School chiefs said they suspended Phelps as soon as the charges became known.

A spokesman for Stratford school said: 'We are taking this matter very seriously. As soon as we learned of the situation, we put Ms Phelps on indefinite leave and subsequently terminated her employment.

'We have done our utmost to fully cooperate with the police during the investigation as well as ensure the privacy of all involved'.
Phelps is the 16th teacher in recent weeks to be charged with sexual offences against a student.

Dancing with the students

A former dance teacher is on the run after it emerged she allegedly had two children with a high school student who performed in her marching band.
Anne Lynn Montgomery, 35, faces sexual assault charges for having a relationship with Bradman Moore which allegedly began at his Texas high school when he was just 15.
The couple subsequently moved in together, and the affair only came to light this year when Montgomery went to court for a protection order, claiming Mr Moore had beaten her up.

Arrest warrant: Anne Montgomery allegedly started having sex with Bradman Moore when he was a freshman in the school's dancing band
But Mr Moore, now 20, denies he ever assaulted Montgomery - and alleges the couple split because he discovered she was sleeping with five other pupils.
He claims their relationship began in 2006, when he was a freshman at Sharpstown High School.

Mr Moore said: 'We had our first sexual relationship in 2006. From there on, I fell in love with her.'
They allegedly slept together the following year on the back seat Montgomery's car in the parking lot of an apartment block where the teenager lived with his mother.

Allegations: The affair only came to light when Montgomery went to court to take a protection order out against Bradman Moore, now 20

In May 2008, Montgomery gave birth to a little girl, and Moore moved in with her. Both moved to Bellaire High School, where their affair continued in secret. In 2009 they had a second daughter but then the relationship began to break down. Mr Moore claims shortly before the little girl was born, Montgomery admitted to having sex with five other students.

Earlier this year the teacher went to court and asked for a protective order against Mr Moore, claiming he beat her up and threatened her in front of their children.

Illicit relationship: The affair allegedly began when Bradman Moore was a freshman at Sharpstown High School, Houston. Montgomery taught him dancing
Mr Moore said: 'She wants it to be where there's a restraining order for my children, but I've never hurt my children. I've never harmed my children.' During court proceedings in April, Mr Moore revealed they had allegedly started sleeping together when he was just 15. After a month-long criminal investigation - including a paternity test which  confirmed Mr Moore is the father of both children - police have now issued a warrant for Montgomery's arrest.

She lost her most recent job, as a colour guard instructor at Ridgepoint High School, when officers arrived to question colleagues about Montgomery's behaviour. Yesterday she was charged with sexual assault of a child under the age of 17 and an improper relationship between a student and an educator. If convicted, she faces a maximum of 20 years in prison.

Simona Manzaranes, Idaho

Simona Manzanares, 32-year-old woman with 5 children from Caldwell, Idaho pleaded guilty to molesting a 14-year-old girl in 2006.

According to plea deal with prosecutors , several other sex charges were dropped.

Manzanares, the very first person convicted under Idaho’s anti-gang law in 2008, is currently serving a 10-year-prison sentence for that crime, was is accused of having illegal sexual contact with four teenagers between 2005-to-2006. Canyon County prosecutors filed the charges against Manzanares on Nov. 29 2010. The criminal complaint says Manzanares had illegal sexual contact with children between the ages of 13 and 16 during a two-year time period.
Caldwell police arrested the now 31-year-old Manzanares in February 2007 under the new Idaho Criminal Gang Enforcement Act, which made it a felony to recruit gang members or provide gangs with firearms. In the past, adults could lure children into gangs, and give them weapons, with no fear of prosecution. That changed on summer 2006, when legislation was passed making that activity a crime.

Police say Manzanares led the female branch of a Caldwell gang and recruited teens and younger children through social events such as car shows and concerts. It is not perfectly clear if the sex crimes Manzanares charged with are linked to gang recruitment – but court documents indicate they occurred at the same time prosecutors say she was active in the gang.

Manzanares is scheduled to be sentenced June 27, 2011.

Would you leave your child home unattended for a date ?

Deputies say an Escambia County woman left her nine-month old son home alone while she went on a date at a local bowling alley.

At around 9:41 Monday night, Deputies responded to Rabon’s apartment after receiving an anonymous tip that the child may have been left alone.

Responding deputies were able to track down Rabon’s cell phone number and successfully contacted her. She confirmed that her son was inside the residence without supervision.
“Once we determined that an infant was inside the apartment we made a forced entry into the unit,” said Deputy Chris Welborn. “We found the baby asleep in his bedroom and, thankfully, he was healthy.”

Moral Duty or Legal Duty ?

A report released Friday shows Chandler police recommended criminal charges against two bishops from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for failing to report that a county supervisor's wife had committed sex acts on a minor after the church leaders heard about the abuse from the woman and her victim.

The report was issued the day after the Pinal County Attorney's office announced no charges will be filed against the LDS bishops Matthew Meyers and Troy Hansen. The report was released by the Chandler Police Department in response to a public records request by The Arizona Republic.

It says the church leaders did not call police after they learned that Susan Brock, 49, wife of Maricopa County Supervisor Fulton Brock, had been molesting the teenage son of another church member and the victim was "seriously injured" by the abuse. They called church lawyers instead, the report says.

Kostas Kalaitzidis, spokesman for the Pinal County Attorney, declined to explain the office's decision not file charges. Available evidence, the law and reasonable likelihood of conviction by a jury are frequently cited by legal experts as factors in decisions whether to bring criminal charges.

Church spokesman Eric Hawkins issued a written statement disputing allegations that church leaders knew of the abuse but failed to take action. He declined to answer questions. "Any allegation that Church leaders knew of abuse but did nothing is inaccurate and offensive. The Church is extremely proactive in its efforts to protect children from abuse of any kind, and works diligently to support and assist victims of abuse. When abuse does occur we work to see that it is reported to the authorities," the statement said.

Attorney Melvin McDonald, who has prosecuted, defended and judged many high-profile cases in Arizona, said if the victim and Susan Brock talked about the molestation with church leaders "they clearly should have reported it" to police. But he is not certain that their failure to do so could be considered criminal. McDonald, a former U.S. Attorney, Maricopa County Superior Court judge, and member of the Mormon Church, said prosecutors must base their decisions on "reasonable likelihood of conviction." That decision could be reconsidered and charges filed in the future, he said.

Laws requiring the reporting of sex abuse are clear in professions like teachers and doctors but less certain for clergy, McDonald said. In Arizona communications and confessions to clergy by perpetrators of crimes are exempt from reporting requirements but personal observations by clergy are not.

The police report says the victim and his father discussed the abuse with church officials and the father was under the impression that the leaders were going to call police and was "tired of waiting" for police intervention. The crime was brought to police attention by the family of the victim's girlfriend who saw explicit messages from Susan Brock on the boy's cell phone.

Chandler Police Officer Christopher Perez said in the report that legal representatives for the church in Salt Lake City told him Arizona is considered a "green state" when it comes to reporting abuse "meaning the Bishop in the LDS Church has no duty to report any information received regarding child abuse if that came to him in confidence."

Susan Brock pleaded guilty to three counts of attempted sexual conduct with a minor, beginning when he was 14, and is serving a 13-year prison term. Her daughter, Rachel, 22, is being held without bond on charges of abusing the same boy.

How dare you

MUNCIE -- Those who maintain female sex offenders are not as harshly punished as their male counterparts might consider the case of 29-year-old Amber Nichole Beaty, sentenced on Monday to 10 years in prison for sexually abusing a 12-year-old boy.

When arrested last October, the Muncie woman denied the boy's allegations, but she acknowledged sleeping in the same bed with the youngster and showing him sexually charged text messages.

According to a probable cause affidavit, the boy told police that Beaty molested him twice, first when she was baby-sitting for him and other children last July and again in August when he was left in her care overnight.

Beaty in April entered into an agreement with prosecutors that called for her to plead guilty to one of three molesting charges pending against her.

At Monday's hearing, Delaware Circuit Court 1 Judge Marianne Vorhees imposed the 10-year sentence, the standard penalty for a Class B felony conviction, and also ruled that Beaty was a sexually violent predator.

That classification will require Beaty to register, for the rest of her life, with authorities in the counties in which she lives and works.

Beaty did not testify Monday. Deputy Prosecutor Louis Denney presented the testimony of the victim's mother and grandmother, who said he continues to suffer as a result of his dealings with Beaty.

"It's had a profound effect on him," Denney said later.

As a result of a change in state policy, as a convicted child molester, Beaty will likely have to serve up to 85 percent of the sentence imposed by Vorhees before being considered for parole.

Most felons in Indiana prisons -- until recently, regardless of their crimes -- are released after serving half of their sentences.
